Samples are mounted in epoxy within 1-inch-diameter retaining rings.

The samples are then successively polished using 600 grit paper (12 μm) followed by 6 → 3 → 1 μm monocrystalline diamond suspensions on microcloth, which provides a smooth surface for the electron-beam interaction.
